Decentralized Social Networking with MIT SOLID pods

Decentralized Social Networking with MIT SOLID pods

In recent years, decentralized solutions that respect user content have gained significance.  Towards this end, various standards and approaches are being specified and utilized.   Decentralized Social Networking Project Image

This project involves developing a decentralized social networking application that aims to serve community interests and individual content ownership. You will examine recent developments in this area regarding protocols and applications that respect content creation. It involves gaining knowledge about currently relevant protocols.

Tim Berners-Lee (on W3C) has led an effort initiated at MIT (and then Inrupt) called SOLID to empower people to use the Web, which was the initial aim of The Web. Here is a write-up that describes some of the concerns about the current state of the Web in contrast to its original vision. You will have a high degree of creativity and involvement in the design.

In this project, we will examine and design a community-oriented social networking application by developing a decentralized model. This model will focus on being inclusive, processable content, and user rights on content. In the subsequent course (Cmpe492) we will implement a prototype with a use-case.
