Transfer Applications to CmpE Department: FAQ and Answers

Q) Who can apply?

A) Students who have spent at least one year in a four-year undergraduate program.

Q) When to apply?

A) Usually in July. See the Academic Calendar in the University website for the exact dates.

Q) Where to apply?

A) The Registrar's Office in the South Campus.

Q) What documents are necessary?

A) Of course, the people in the Registrar's Office (Kayıt İşleri Şube Müdürlüğü) have the exact details. So ask them. But a transcript from your university, a description of the courses that you have taken (maybe a few pages containing that information from the university catalog), your ÖSS or SAT result document, and proof of knowledge of English would certainly be a good idea.

Q) Should I come personally to the department and talk with the professors?

A) No.

Q) What if I don't have proof of knowledge of English handy?

A) I guess the University organizes an English exam for such people, but the people in the Registrar's Office have the correct answer to this question.

Q) Do I have to pay an application fee?

A) The people in the Registrar's Office have the correct answer to this question.

Q) What is the minimum GPA requirement?

A) This may change every year, and the exact value can be told to you by the Secretariat of the Faculty of Engineering or the Registrar's Office some time after the month of May, but it is highly likely NOT to be less than 3.25 out of 4.00.

Q) What are the minimum number of credits that I have to transfer?

A) This may change every year, and the exact value can be told to you by the Secretariat of the Faculty of Engineering or the Registrar's Office some time after the month of May, but it is highly likely NOT to be less than 11 per semester for people coming from other universities, and 9 for people coming from Boğaziçi. To see what this means, look at the BS curriculum in this website and compare our courses with the courses that you have already taken. In this way, you can form an idea about how many credits you are in the position of transferring to our department.

Q) What are my chances of being admitted?

A) Well, a huge number of people apply each year, and only a very small number is actually accepted. Don't waste your time if you are not one of the very best students in your present department, and if you are not in the top very few percent of an exam like the ÖSS. There are several other universities and departments in the world.

Q) When and from whom would I learn the result?

A) Usually sometime in the second half of September. Check the academic calendar; the deadline for that decision to be given by the Faculty Board is written there. You learn the result from the Secretariat of the Faculty of Engineering, and not from the Department or anywhere else.

Q) Who is the person to ask further questions (although I carefully read everything here)?

A) Please check the Departmental Responsibilities page.
