General Information on MS in CMPE

  • The MS program consists of 8 technical courses + 1 seminar course. Technical courses should be in alignment with the advisor's research topic.
  • The student can take the technical courses as either 4+4 or 4+3+1 or 4+2+2 or 3+3+2.
  • If the student fails from some technical courses in one semester, she/he has to repeat it with another course in the next semester. These will be additional courses over the regular course load. For example: Assume that  the student has taken 3 courses in the first semester but failed from two of them. Then in the next semester 5 courses have to be taken.
  • Seminar course (CMPE579) is a non-credit course and it is advised that the students should take it in their first semester.
  • CMPE599 is a 4-credit course in which the student can start research and prepare the MS Thesis proposal under the guidance of his/her advisor. The student has to register to the related section of the advisor. The earliest time that it can be taken is the second semester provided that the student has passed from at least three courses in the first semester. CMPE599 cannot be taken after MS Thesis proposal is prepared. If you happen to change your MS Thesis topic afterwards, CMPE599 cannot be repeated or taken.
  • The student has to register to CMPE690: MS THESIS in her/his third semester (regardless of your GPA). The student has to register to the related section of the advisor.
  • CMPE690 and CMPE599 can be taken together in the third semester. CMPE599 cannot be taken after the student gets a TP from CMPE690.
  • A student may take non-credit courses, but these courses have to be passed before graduation. If the advisor approves, a non-credit course can be converted to a course with credits until the end of the add-drop period of the next semester.
  • It is expected that the student will complete his/her MS THESIS in one year.
  • For graduation, at least one conference paper should be submitted.
  • Recall that the maximum time-span for the MS program is 3 years. If the thesis cannot be completed within the time-span, then the department might ask the student to change the advisor or to take additional courses.
